Sun Protection Fishing Gloves
Nothing much beats fishing on a warm summer’s day. It’s a time when the sun is shining, the water is warm, and the fish are active and hopefully plentiful. There’s a sense of relaxation and peace that comes with being out on the water, enjoying the beauty of nature and the anticipation of a bite.
There is unfortunately a downside to fishing under the sun. That thing called a ozone layer and those UV rays from the sun can do us harm. We should all know that when we are exposed to the sun for any length of time that we need sun protection. This includes a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and clothing that covers your body. A sometimes overlooked piece of clothing are sun protection gloves. Not for me though! I carry several types of gloves as part of my fishing kit.
Now I will turn to providing you with the information on how to choose the best sun protection fishing gloves and also a few recommendations.
Key Criteria for buying Sun Protection fishing gloves
Sun Protection Rating
UPF stands for “Ultraviolet Protection Factor” and is a standard measurement for how much UV radiation can penetrate through fabric, such as fishing gloves. A UPF rating of 50 means that only 1/50th (or 2%) of UV radiation can pass through the fabric. The higher the UPF rating, the more protection the fabric provides. Idea.
Seek out sun protection gloves with ideally an UPF rating of 50. The minimum you should consider is a rating of 30. This will help to protect your hands from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, including sunburn and long-term skin damage.
Durability
You want your fishing gear to last. Fishing can be harsh your gloves. Fishing gloves will be exposed to water, sun, bait, hooks, lures, fish slime and possibly fish guts. Therefore durability is important. Sun protection fishing gloves should be made of strong and high-quality materials. This should include rip resistant materials, stitching should be reinforced and basically the design should be hold up for multiple uses. Finger and wrist pull loops will help with getting the sun protection fishing gloves on and off without damaging them.
Grip
Fishing gloves should provide a good grip, especially if you’re handling slippery fish and fishing gear. Look for gloves with grip sections on the palms or fingers that will provide a secure grip, even when wet.
Protection From Fish and Fishing Gear
Most sun protection fishing gloves are made from polyester or other stretchable material. This makes sense as you generally want a lightweight glove for fishing the warmer seasons. However, be conscious of the type of fishing that you are doing. Protection from fish teeth and spikes, as well as tackle may be a key criteria for you.
Comfort
Make sure the sun protection fishing gloves are comfortable to wear for long periods fishing. They should have a good fit with no rough seams or irritating materials. They should also not make your hands clammy.
Cuff Length
If you goal is sun protection, consider the length of the cuff, as you may also ensure no exposed skin between your gloves and long sleeved shirt.
Material
Seek out gloves made from lightweight, breathable, and quick-drying materials. This generally means synthetic fabrics like polyester or nylon. These materials will help keep your hands cool and dry, even on those thinking hot or humid days.
Features to look for when Buying Sun Protection fishing gloves
Now you have a good set of criteria for deciding on the best sun protection fishing gloves. Decide if you need lightweight fishing gloves or gloves that will also provide protection from handling fish. Also consider if you want fingerless or full finger fishing gloves.
You should also consider the type of fishing that you like to do, such as boating, kayaking, land based, etc. You can then ensure that that gloves balance sun protection with functionality.
